Dr. Lucia Vidal Beare, age 96, died peacefully at home on Friday, July 7, 2017. Her beloved husband, John Byron Beare, preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons Frederick W. Martin, III and Nicholas Vidal Beare, her daughter-in-law Marcia Beare, and her grandchildren Spencer Martin, Corey Martin, Amanda Beare, and John Beare. She was stepmother to Elizabeth Thomas and Josephine Lundy and step grandmother to Stanley Thomas, Elizabeth Cohen, Erin Carlson, Tyler Lundy, Matthew Lundy and great step grandmother to Connor, Tate, and Liam Carlson, Chip Thomas, and Aiden Cohen.

Dr. Beare was born in Santiago, Chile on July 27, 1920. She attended École Notre-Dame les Oiseaux, a boarding school in Verneuil-sur-Seine, France. Upon her return to Santiago she received her Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from the Universidad de Chile where she also completed her Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 1947. Dr. Beare went on to complete her medical training at Stanford University, Palo Alto, CA as an intern and subsequently completed her residency at Columbia Presbyterian, New York, NY in 1951 where she was awarded the title of Chief Resident. She practiced medicine for many years in St. Louis at both St. Luke’s Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital as an Anesthesiologist.

Dr. Beare was a lover of arts and literature. She obtained a Masters in French from Washington University, St. Louis, MO and was an active member of L’alliance Française. Fluent in four languages, she traveled extensively and was a life-long learner.

The family wishes to thank her devoted caregivers Barbara Lattimore, Yolanda Cain, Hattie Fleming, and Gracie Stevenson, as well as her compassionate St. Luke’s Hospice nurses Julia, Angie and Sawanna.
