Obituary for Sr. Mary Jonette Rolando RSM
Rolando, Sister Mary Jonette, RSM. Sister Mary Jonette died at Mercy Hospital. St. Louis on Oct. 9, 2017 following heart failure. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in St. Louis, MO in 1960. Sister was 84 years old and was a Sister of Mercy for fifty-seven years. Born in Gillespie, IL in 1934 to Dominic and Mary Ethel (Lyons) Rolando. Vivian (Sister’s Baptismal name) was one of four children.
Dear sister of Virginia Forehand of Bethalto, IL and John (Romayne) Rolando of Petersburg IL; dear aunt of Janice (Bob) Andrews, Donna (Paul) Myer, Larry Forehand and Sara Rolando; dear great-aunt & great-great-aunt. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother, William, brother-in-law Warren Forehand and niece Dorothy Forehand.
Sister received Masters Degrees in Special Education and Counseling, and post graduate work at Care and Counseling, Inc. She educated hundreds of special needs children in Bethesda, Maryland which she considered a true privilege. Upon her return to St. Louis in 1974 she ministered as a psychotherapist which afforded her the opportunity to make recommendations to parents regarding their children. In addition to her many talents, Sister was a great musician and wrote music. She played the guitar, the harmonica the piano, the accordion and the dulcimer. In 2017 Sister moved to Catherine’s Residence, the retirement home for the Sisters of Mercy. Although declining health inhibited her activity, Sister dedicated her ministry of prayer for community, family and needs of the world.
