Obituary for Sue Young (Mathews)

Sue Young (Mathews)
Young, Sue C. of Warson Woods passed from this life January 19, 2018 at the age of 86. Beloved wife of the late Marvin O. Young; dear mother of Victoria (Bradley Pickard) Young of Cincinnati, OH and Kendall M. (Caroline) Young of Des Peres; loving grandmother of Kayla, Marissa, Ellery, Kory and Griffin Young.
Sue was born to Herbert and Ruth Mathews in Des Moines, IA on October 26, 1931. She was named "prize baby" at the Iowa State Fair in 1934. Sue had one brother, Randall Mathews, who preceded her in death.
Sue attended Perkins Grade School, Callanan Junior High School and graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri on May 28, 1951.
She and Marvin were married at Plymouth Congregational Church on August 23, 1952. They lived in San Antonio, TX and Wichita , KS during Marvin’s service in the Air Force. They briefly lived in St Louis before moving to Columbia, MO and then returning to St Louis to stay in 1968.
Sue was generous with her time. She served on the William Woods National Alumnae Association Board for 7 years, two of which she served as President, and received their Green Owl Award. She was also an active member of P.E.O., serving as President of Chapter GI in St. Louis from 1981-1984 and as President of the P.E.O. Reciprocity Board of Greater St. Louis, 1985-1986. She was also a proud member of Rotary Ann’s Club and Webster Groves High School Mother’s Club.
Sue was a great hostess and she and Marvin entertained both family and friends. They also enjoyed traveling together, both in the U.S. and abroad. A talented seamstress, she made many Halloween costumes and doll clothes for Vicki’s Barbie’s. She became active in genealogical research in 1989 and enjoyed finding long lost relatives.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, Jan. 27 from 10-11:30 AM followed by a memorial service at 11:30 AM at Bopp Chapel, 10610 Manchester Road. Memorials may be made to the Marvin O. and Sue C. Young Endowed Scholarship at Westminster College, 501 Westminster Avenue, Fulton, MO 65251
